Sénanque Abbey in Provence

Situated a little further from the campsite (2 hrs) than its little sister Thoronet Abbey, Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey is a Cistercian monastery still in activity, located in Gordes, in the Vaucluse area.

Founded in 1148, it forms one of the “Three Provencal Sisters” alongside Silvacane and Thoronet.

The abbey was so prosperous that a second abbey was founded by the community in the Vivarais area just two years later. The site’s cultural aspects, catering and upkeep have been managed by the firm Berliet since 1969, allowing monks to continue to live there in peace. All work is performed using original materials and techniques.
